Application

Application

A magnetic head pulley, or head roller magnet, separates ferromagnetic particles, such as iron or steel, and even weakly magnetic particles (such as particles from processed stainless steel) from coarse to very fine fractions and carries them away completely automatically and continuously. This magnetic roller is built into an existing conveyor belt system as a head or tail roller. and is a cost-effective magnetic metal separator. It is important to feed the material onto the conveyor belt with the magnetic conveyor roller in a thin layer (ideally a mono-layer). Magnetic head pulleys require practically no maintenance, and because these magnets are integrated in an existing installation there are almost no extra operating and energy costs.

For larger layer thickness a head roller magnet can be combined with a suspension or overband magnet. In this configuration the suspended magnet draws the pieces of steel out of the upper layer and the head roller magnet draws them from the lower layers of the bulk flow. Magnetic head roller separators are particularly well suited for separation of problematic shapes such as ball bearings or batteries. They are used for:

recycling and/or recovery of ferrous metals
removing, purging or eliminating ferrous parts or weakly magnetic particles from product flows
protection of machines (prevention of damage caused by metal particles)

Placement

Placement

Keep the following in mind when integrating a magnetic head pulley:

Use of head scrapers is not possible. Otherwise iron particles would be scraped off before the magnet can separate them.
No steel components in the vicinity of the head roller magnet (such as the splitter: it must be made of a non-magnetic material). Otherwise this part will be magnetized, which has a negative impact on the separation.
The field depth of the magnet.
Type of magnet system in combination with the belt thickness. The optimal placement/position of the separation partition depends on the application.

Goudsmit has plenty of experience with this and will be happy to provide recommendations.

Design

Design

Magnetic head pulleys are made in standard sizes and can therefore be easily integrated into an existing installation. The shaft diameter, for example, is suitable for SNL bearing blocks, and the shaft journal (including keyway) is suitable for a standard SEW gear unit. These are global standards and therefore cover most applications. The modular design makes it easy to replace the shaft, which is ideal for maintenance and customer-specific solutions. Various versions available to meet your needs:

Belt width: 400-2000 mm
Diameters: 150-400 mm
Magnet system: both axial and radial magnet construction

Working principle

Working principle

A magnetic head pulley is a head or tail roller that is filled with magnets. This roller forms a magnetic system with a correspondingly rotating magnetic field that is active around the entire circumference. The magnetic field attracts ferromagnetic metal particles in a product flow. The conveyor belt that runs over the roller carries these particles with it to the underside of the roller. When they are no longer in range of the magnetic field they fall off the belt, where they are collected and/or carried away. For strongly magnetic particles, we can place cleats on the belt to 'push' the particles out of the magnetic field.

For damp or fine metal particles we fit a scraper to prevent them from sticking to the belt. The advantage of a head roller magnet is that it is a continuous system, so there is no need to stop the product flow to carry off the separated metal particles. This makes the head roller magnet very suitable for product flows with lots of Fe particles. Because the product passes very close to the magnet it is also a very powerful and effective separator.
